Dose
Hepatic encephalopathy: 30 mL PO TDS titrated to 2–3 soft stools/day; can give 300 mL in 700 mL water PR.
Use
Treatment and secondary prevention of hepatic encephalopathy; constipation.
Monitoring
Stool frequency, sodium and volume status, mental state (West Haven grade).
Side effects
- • Bloating, flatulence
- • Diarrhoea with dehydration
- • Hypernatraemia if excessive
