Aortic Aneurysm (AAA/TAA)

Vascular

Localised aortic dilatation >50% normal diameter.

Risk factors

  • Age >65, male, smoking, HTN, FHx, atherosclerosis
  • Marfan/Ehlers-Danlos for TAA

Investigations

  • USS screening for AAA (men ≥65)
  • CT angio if >5 cm or symptoms

Management

  • Monitor: <5.5 cm asymptomatic — USS q6-12 months + risk factor mgmt
  • Repair: >5.5 cm, rapid growth (>0.5 cm/6 mo), symptomatic — EVAR or open
  • TAA: >5.5 cm ascending, >6 cm descending; earlier in Marfan
