Phenylephrine

Dose

Bolus 50–200 mcg IV; infusion 0.5–5 mcg/kg/min.

Indications

  • Anaesthesia-related hypotension
  • Neurogenic shock (bridge)
  • AVNRT with hypotension

Contraindications

  • Severe hypertension
  • Uncorrected hypovolaemia

Dilution & preparation

10 mg in 100 mL NS = 100 mcg/mL

Use

Pressor when tachycardia undesirable (e.g., AS, HOCM).

Monitoring

BP, HR (reflex bradycardia).

Side effects

  • Reflex bradycardia
  • Peripheral ischaemia
  • Extravasation necrosis
