Octreotide

Dose

50 mcg IV bolus then 50 mcg/h infusion × 3–5 days in variceal bleeding.

Use

Splanchnic vasoconstriction in variceal haemorrhage; also acromegaly and high-output fistula.

Monitoring

Glucose, rebleeding, HR, gallbladder on long-term use.

Side effects

  • Hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia
  • Bradycardia
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Gallstones
