Alendronate
Dose
70 mg PO weekly, fasting with 200 mL water, upright ≥30 min.
Contraindications
- • eGFR <35
- • Oesophageal stricture/achalasia
- • Inability to sit upright
Use
Osteoporosis treatment and glucocorticoid-induced bone loss.
Monitoring
Calcium/vitamin D repletion first, renal function, dental review, DEXA at 3 years.
Side effects
- • Oesophagitis
- • Musculoskeletal pain
- • Osteonecrosis of jaw (rare)
- • Atypical femoral fracture
